She told me to ice it 6 times per day, stretch it as many times with certain exercises she gave me, and take ibuprofen with every meal. And I can exercise as long as I use my judgment and stop when I need to. She said we'll work on strength later once I loosen up my hip flexors and reduce the inflammation.
So today I went into the gym and did front squats:
3-3-3-3-3
30-35-40-45-40...new front squat PR wheeee-ha!
I think as our muscles are getting stronger there is going to be some realignment that occurs, and this is part of it. Deal is to pay attention to the pain that will tell which muscles need to be strengthened to balance out the other ones. I know I am having that problem with my hamstrings being lots stronger now and thus tighter, which I think contributed to the strain or pull that happened to my right calf last month (well that plus the barefoot running thing). It sounds like she is saying the lateral (toward outside of body) quad strength (quads are actually three muscles, one medial or inner body, one middle and one lateral) is pulling the patella laterally (to the outside of the body) and thus out of the patella femoral groove on the front of the femur, and what needs to happen is to strengthen the medial quad and adductors (muscles on inside of thigh that pull legs together) so as to pull harder medially on the patella tendon and thus pull it back into the pf groove. Makes sense. I can talk with you about this since I have been dogged with inflammation of the pf groove (chondromalacia) for years.
ReplyDeleteI found out today that I've been doing my sqats incorrectly (they look OK, but I'm not letting the correct muscles do the work) which probably contributed to my hip flexor problem. Well that and 150 wall balls!
ReplyDeleteToday Dan showed me the power snatch, an explosive lift as demonstrated, and a slow motion press type movement as carried out by me. Need lots of work on that one. Wish Rippetoe had it on his DVD. WOD = sets of 12 power snatches and 10 pushups in 20 min AMRAP. Forgot to log my results, but suffice to say no records were set!
