w00t

still struggling to be 100% paleo. not enough time to cook like i want to. can't wait to graduate and be able to lock down my nutrition better. tiny fridge that half-freezes my meats/produce doesn't help either.

today's WOD was cleans, every minute on the minute for 15 minutes. i did power cleans.
30-40-45-50-50-50-50-50-50-45-45-45-45-45

considering that my previous clean max is 50 kg (i think), it's definitely time to look for a new max one day soon... this was a light metcon, perhaps wasn't breathing as hard as i should have been, but didn't want to keep going too heavy for fear of screwing up something because i had nobody to check out my form. my core hurts, so i know i did something right.

have a shit-ton of work tomorrow so not sure if i can go at all. dan is planning on doing a 2-a-day. so jealous.

Back to lifting after messing up my right vastus medialis tendons/ligaments last week on a back squat at 50K where I had apparently not separated feets enough. Felt OK today. Had taken Bro on a run on Sunday to try the knee out, which was met with success which I credit to fish oil - taking ~3 grams of the stuff a day, 8 capsules from TJ's.

Still essentially on Paleo though had some 12 grain toast this a.m. at R. Thos with Nancy. Last Saturday night I hoovered an approximate pi/8 sector of carrot cake plus scoop of ice cream and thereupon got cramps so bad I was on the porcelain throne for 30 minutes and almost threw up the pain was so bad. Is that typical if one OD's on sugar after being on paleo?

Yesterday and today

Yesterday's workout wasn't exactly as good as I had hoped it would be. I went in feeling kind of nauseous and tired, and I ended up doing only two rounds of the five round workout:

5 rounds for time of 12 DL/9 hang power clean/6 push jerk - 155 #

I did 2 rounds with 30 kg (started out with 32.5, had to take some plates off mid-round) with a time of 4:49 or something. Stopped after 2 rounds because I was gassed, and because I felt like throwing up, something which the Williams gym personnel (who already kind f hate me for staying right until closing time and bringing a gym bag into the weight room) would not look too kindly upon. I was super unsatisfied, so I tacked on 10 OH squats at 15kg just to not feel like a failure.

Today I almost didn't go because I am still feeling sick (unpaleo breakfast had something to do with it), but I went tonight after some delicious chicken and green beans cooked in butter/garlic. (The butter was browned so I am hoping the milk solids cooked out.) But I did, and I conquered the *shame* of doing jumping pull ups in the Williams gym.

5 rounds for time of: 15 40# DB split cleans/21 pull ups
I used 15# dumbbells and probably could have gone a bit heavier, but these still tired me out. I did, as mentioned, jumping pull ups. Time of 9:31 - I was amazed because partway into the second round I looked at the stopwatch and already had 2:30 on the clock and I didn't think I'd make it under 10 minutes, but I did, and rather comfortably at that.

Got really sweaty and smelly and had to sit down and catch my breath for a few minutes before starting the clock for Dan, who did the same workout using the same scaling and had a time of 13:38ish. He is still figuring out The Met Con Workout and how to pace himself. He hasn't gotten over that mental hurdle of keeping going even though you are short of breath. Some people get that faster than others I guess. He'll get there. It's nice to have a partner because he keeps me accountable for going and doing the workouts, and it's nice as a potential future coach because I am figuring out what cues work and don't work in the middle of a workout--and importantly, I am learning more that I need to hold my tongue and let people figure out pacing/their own limits.

The stupid pull up bar was knurled--what a bitch--and so I have some nasty blisters forming. Dan's calluses ripped open and bled so I've got to figure out some creative taping for him for the next week or so.

While he was cleaning up his hand I whipped out my jump rope and did some Single Unders (ha!) and then tried jumping just a little higher and snapping the rope around a little faster, and VOILA! My first double under! Then I stopped, did some more single unders, and then got another double under. Now I need to be able to string them together. But let's get realistic: I still kind of suck at consistent single unders so I need to work at that. The tuck jump sub in the other day's workout really helped my conception of double unders though.

Lastly, my kip is coming along. I worked on it a bit before the WOD and it seems pretty strong. My hands/the knurled bar were holding me back a lot though. Also tried some more knees to elbows, and it's way weird on the bar. I miss the rings!

Got weighed in the tank for body fat last night. Turns out I am 22.something pct bodyweight, which is in 50th percentile for my age group. 3.6 pounds overweight according to their charts. Obviously have work to do; patience is key - paleo and crossfit workouts.

i'm back

since i am more or less crossfitting on a regular basis now that i have a reliable workout buddy, i am reviving the blog

i am doing the WODs a week behind mainsite, as does my home affiliate, CF ATL.

today's WOD was row 500/150 double unders/50 burpees for time, but since i can do neither burpees nor double unders, i followed the "puppies" scaling on Brand X's site. (note to self: get better at jumping rope; wean yourself back off of knee pushups)

for time: row 500m/30 tuck jumps/20 squat thrusts
i did this in 3:32

my 500m was pretty good for me, around 2:02. the tuck jumps psyched me out at first; i did three, ran out of breath, and was thinking, "oh dear lord i will be doing these in twos and threes." and indeed, that's how i did the first ten while getting my breath back, but then after that i did the next 20 in 2 sets of 10. the squat thrusts were by far the worst, thank goodness there were only 20.

have been feeling off, having stomach aches and nausea. this is because i have been eating at the dining hall for the past few days, IE not eating strictly paleo. eurgh. so for dinner (after a gross lunch) i scrounged up some cold chicken, blackberries, and some heaping spoons of almond butter. not the most balanced paleo meal but still better than pasta or whatever crap my college is serving up. tomorrow will hopefully have time to cook more.

unfortunately, i have been having a terrible bout of insomnia, so i feel like a dead girl walking these days. had just finally gotten to sleep/settled in for a long nap when dan called to do the workout. i was pretty pissed that i had to wake up from my precious sleep, but i'm glad i did this WOD, since it's one i'd usually opt out of if i had my druthers. the other night i couldn't sleep and so went on a run at 10:45...i dragged dan along, and he was super good natured about it. he used to do cross country in high school, so the short distance was nothing for him...but if you know me, it's obviously a huge deal that i wanted to go on a run at all. and i ran the whole distance, which was around a mile. i haven't run an unbroken mile since...ever, maybe.

proud of myself. i think i am starting to like running, since crossfit has taught me that there is no shame in pacing myself. i want to work running into my regular routine--may start running instead of rowing for CFE workouts.
