Yesterday's workout wasn't exactly as good as I had hoped it would be. I went in feeling kind of nauseous and tired, and I ended up doing only two rounds of the five round workout:
5 rounds for time of 12 DL/9 hang power clean/6 push jerk - 155 #
I did 2 rounds with 30 kg (started out with 32.5, had to take some plates off mid-round) with a time of 4:49 or something. Stopped after 2 rounds because I was gassed, and because I felt like throwing up, something which the Williams gym personnel (who already kind f hate me for staying right until closing time and bringing a gym bag into the weight room) would not look too kindly upon. I was super unsatisfied, so I tacked on 10 OH squats at 15kg just to not feel like a failure.
Today I almost didn't go because I am still feeling sick (unpaleo breakfast had something to do with it), but I went tonight after some delicious chicken and green beans cooked in butter/garlic. (The butter was browned so I am hoping the milk solids cooked out.) But I did, and I conquered the *shame* of doing jumping pull ups in the Williams gym.
5 rounds for time of: 15 40# DB split cleans/21 pull ups
I used 15# dumbbells and probably could have gone a bit heavier, but these still tired me out. I did, as mentioned, jumping pull ups. Time of 9:31 - I was amazed because partway into the second round I looked at the stopwatch and already had 2:30 on the clock and I didn't think I'd make it under 10 minutes, but I did, and rather comfortably at that.
Got really sweaty and smelly and had to sit down and catch my breath for a few minutes before starting the clock for Dan, who did the same workout using the same scaling and had a time of 13:38ish. He is still figuring out The Met Con Workout and how to pace himself. He hasn't gotten over that mental hurdle of keeping going even though you are short of breath. Some people get that faster than others I guess. He'll get there. It's nice to have a partner because he keeps me accountable for going and doing the workouts, and it's nice as a potential future coach because I am figuring out what cues work and don't work in the middle of a workout--and importantly, I am learning more that I need to hold my tongue and let people figure out pacing/their own limits.
The stupid pull up bar was knurled--what a bitch--and so I have some nasty blisters forming. Dan's calluses ripped open and bled so I've got to figure out some creative taping for him for the next week or so.
While he was cleaning up his hand I whipped out my jump rope and did some Single Unders (ha!) and then tried jumping just a little higher and snapping the rope around a little faster, and VOILA! My first double under! Then I stopped, did some more single unders, and then got another double under. Now I need to be able to string them together. But let's get realistic: I still kind of suck at consistent single unders so I need to work at that. The tuck jump sub in the other day's workout really helped my conception of double unders though.
Lastly, my kip is coming along. I worked on it a bit before the WOD and it seems pretty strong. My hands/the knurled bar were holding me back a lot though. Also tried some more knees to elbows, and it's way weird on the bar. I miss the rings!

I'm impressed that you worked out when you were feeling so bad. Good job both of you on the other metcon. I know you (and your hands) will be glad to get back to a viable pull up bar.
ReplyDeleteI did a lunchtime workout on Friday - 21 15 9 of SDHP, KBs, and jumping pull ups. I only used 30# for the SDHP (rather than RX of 65#) but 16K KB, which was RX. The gym was full of folks doing this, mostly male, and my time ended up in the middle or better (I'm sure my lighter SDHP weight helped a bit). My mental hurdle is being out of breath and HOT - hate that. Big incentive to go in the am, that's for sure.
Wow, double unders! Totally impressed.
